Before I go into more detail about the history of the NAΩS*CARD, I would like to recite one of the first speeches Buddha gave after the 49 days that led to his enlightenment:

It is true that there is suffering.
There is a cause of suffering.
There is a way out of suffering.
There is a goal at the end of the path that leads out of suffering.

When asked by one of Buddha's companions, he answered the question: "You said that there are causes of suffering. Can you say anything about the nature of these causes?" Buddha then named the following as the only forms of suffering that are given to man:

People suffer when they get what they do not want.
They suffer when they want what they cannot have.
They suffer when they cannot distinguish whether they get what they do not want or want what they cannot have.
